Then we have ‘texting.’ This is actually a new word in our vocabulary and apparently our dictionaries. The word ‘text’ existed, of course, however it is a noun, whereas ‘texting’ is a verb. Now the word ‘text’ is also at times a verb, as in, “Don’t text and drive.” It even has a past tense—‘texted,’ as in, “I texted her about our meeting.” Although the Internet has opened up so much opportunity in so many ways, it generally represents a method of communication fraught with misunderstanding potential. Tone of voice, inflection, etc. are all lost due to the lack of verbal exchange. Sometimes it is more effective to write than to speak. For example, I’m writing a book, not delivering a speech. I will confess that the absence of emoticons or at least a colon followed by parentheses has proven to be challenging when I want to impart that something is tongue-in-cheek or meant to be humorous.
